Culture and behaviour

Suzanne de Boer and Roland Notermans presented a summary of the research they conducted last year together with 4 other members of the knowledge table Culture and behavior about the relation between supervisory board members and the compliance function in the organization. The most important lessons resulting from this research: listen to the needs of all stakeholder, ask them what they need in order to reach their goals and explore ways on how to join forces. By doing so you will improve the effectiveness of the compliance programme, you will focus more on the important issues while building constructive relations enabling both the compliance function as well as the supervisory board member in achieving long term value creation. Lively exchanges of views between the participants followed their presentation.

RegTech

KT RegTech had invited Data Evangelist Jack Esselink for the RegTech break out session. Jack shared his take on the developments on the use of data and on the down side of data use with the participants of this break out session. What are the positive sides of data use and what are the things that you’d better leave behind. In what arena are you and what could be the compliance professional’s contribution? The sessions were crowded and evidently hit the mark with the audience.

Privacy

In one of the beautiful parlours of the theatre, KT Privacy offered an entertaining and interactive presentation to enhance the participants awareness and level of knowledge: a game. The KT had made a quizz full of provoking questions, resulting in a tantalizing competition. The result was: two winners (in the two rounds) receiving a well deserved Handbook DPIA; one new joiner and two interested VCO members. A tribute to presenters Marieke van der Putten and Francis Joung! The quiz also was the setting in which a new idea was born to be explored by both the KT FEC and KT privacy: what is the relationship between the Act on Terrorism Financing and money laundering and the Sanction act on the one hand and the GDPR on the other? To be continued!

KT ESG

This KT was established less than a year ago but it has organized several ESG-related topics for VCO events already. This time the KT’s key message was to start off preparing for the new ESG regulatory obligations, although their contents is not yet cristal clear. Presenters Jantine Kooij and Geert Vermeulen have been studying the ESG subjects professionally for some time now. The audience was clearly taken aback by the sheer abundance and speed of the new regulations. The presenters showed a timeline, clearly indicating the type and geographic scope of regulations and the expected dates for entering into force. The most important take away: as the compliance professionals have an explicit role in sustainable value creation (look at the professional profile on the VCO website) they are in the lead for defining the KPIs for ESG, the data that should be obtained as well as the data sources and who should be doing what. Starting now!

KT Structuring the compliance function

The newest KT can feel proud of their successful plenary panel session featuring three regulatory officials discussing the compliance function in three branches. Sakina Kodad (the Authority Consumer and Market), Ralph Lange (Financial Markets Authority) and Ricardo Peeters Weem (National Health Care and Cure Authority) were well prepared to exchange views among themselves and with the audience using thought provoking statements such as: are the authority’s and the compliance functions interests aligned? This resulted in a lively discussion offering the audience support in their search for their optimal role in their organizations as well as their partnering with the regulator.
